Skyline Middle School Extra-Curricular Activities

 

On the Road

This is our primary after school program. This mentorship and academic support program meets Monday-Thursday after school from 2:05 pm-4:35 pm. Parents must provide transportation after school on Monday and Wednesdays. OTR can take students home on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each week consists of enrichment projects with community volunteers, career exploration, homework help and field trips.

 

 


Leadership and Service:

Falcon Student Ambassadors (FSA)

Student leadership organization which provides leadership training and opportunities. Responsibilities of a Student Ambassador include serving as a student representative, assisting with new student orientation/tours, planning anti-bullying, Tobacco awareness, dances, and kindness campaign activities. Student leaders focus on team interests and needs of the students, inspiring peers, developing integrity, learning how to encourage, support peers, and much more.  

 

Builders Club

Builders Club is a service organization connected to Key Club and Kiwanis International. Students focus on opportunities to do community service and build leadership skills. Builders Club will meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month after school beginning on September 21, 2022.

 

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

The Skyline chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is for students who show outstanding qualities in scholarship, character, civic engagement, service, and leadership. All students who have completed at least one year of middle school and earned at least one A and no grade below B are eligible to apply to NJHS. Monthly meetings and service projects focus on leadership and civic engagement.

 

Jr. Model United Nations (Jr. MUN)

In addition to meeting twice a month, students will take one trip to a high school MUN event (TBD).

 

Believers of Christ (B.O.C.)

Student-led club focused on equipping students with leadership skills and building character aimed to develop the next generation of leaders and engaged citizens in the Harrisonburg Community. Students will have the opportunity to engage in mentorship relationships with Every Nation Campus members from local colleges.

Equality club  focuses on building a safe environment for all students at SKMS.

 

Lego Robotics

Students research, create presentations, design/program robots to perform functions,and compete in a  regional competition in November/December.


 

Chess/Game Club

Chess and game club will meet after school on Mondays & Wednesdays from 2:00-4:35 pm (starting in January).

 

Dungeons & Dragons Club

This club will meet every Thursday from 2:05-3:30 pm.

 

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month beginning on September 14, 2022.


 

 


Performing Arts

Middle School Musical

Fall musical production that meets after school. Students learn the basics of musical theater and perform three performances of the middle school one weekend in November. Roles for actors and stage crew. 

 

Middle School Play

Spring play productions that meet after school. Students learn the basics of acting and perform one act plays three times on a weekend in March.

 

Step Team (Coed):”SKMS  STEPPAS”

Students will aim to engage and create and  perform unique dances. Stepping is a form of percussive dance in which the participants' entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken works and hand claps. Students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th try out at the beginning of the year. Step team members are chosen during tryouts. The team practices and performs throughout the year.

 

Note: Students can apply to start new clubs with a staff member sponsor and administrative approval. 

 

 


SKMS Athletics

Middle School sports seasons are 6 to 8 weeks and focus on the basic skills of each sport, appropriate competition, and sportsmanship. All students are required to have an official VHSL physical on file. Students compete against Harrisonburg City and Rockingham County Schools. 

  • Cross Country (Grades 6-8) In this Fall sport which begins the week before school, students learn the basics of distance running. Athletes compete in weekly 2 mile races.

  • Girls Volleyball (Grades 7-8) In this Fall sport which begins the week before, students learn the basics of volleyball with two matches per week. 

  • Boys and Girls Basketball (7th Grade Team--late Fall, 8th Grade Team--Winter) Students focus on fundamentals and basic game play. Two games per week. 

  • Cheerleading (Grades 6-8) Learn basic cheers and stunts. The team cheers for the 7th and 8th grade basketball seasons. 

  • Wrestling (6-8) In this Winter Sport, students learn basic wrestling moves and compete in one to two matches per week. Students compete against students of similar weight.

  • Track and Field (6-8) In this Spring sport, students learn the basics of and compete in running, jumping and throwing events.

  • Boys and Girls Soccer (Boys--Fall, Girls--Spring) Students focus on fundamentals and basic game play. Approximately two games per week against THMS and local private schools. 

  • Lacrosse: HCPS is considering adding lacrosse for Fall 2022. Contact Ms. Randolph as needed.

Golf Club

Gymnastics (Grades 6th - 8th)

This is an interest based program. The program runs from late November to February. Practices are at Harrisonburg High School, one or two days a week.
