The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) is a high-quality preschool education program for at-risk four-year-olds, funded by the state of Virginia and Harrisonburg City Schools.  VPI classrooms provide instruction in accordance with the Foundation Blocks for Early Learning, which establish a measurable, scientifically-based range of skills and knowledge
essential for young children to be ready for success in kindergarten.

In HCPS, our vision for the future is that all children in our city will have access to high quality early childhood education that ensures school readiness and growth toward reaching their fullest potential as happy, healthy, productive members of our community.

Through the HCPS VPI programs, our mission is to partner with families and the community to provide high quality inclusive early childhood education and care that fosters each child's social-emotional, physical, cognitive and language development in a safe, healthy, play-based learning environment that respects and celebrates the culture creativity and unique differences of every child and their family.

VPI classrooms are currently located at the Elon Rhodes Early Learning Center and Keister Elementary, and in the following community daycare settings:  Generations Crossing, Harrisonburg/Rockingham Child Day Care Center, JMU Young Children's Program, Roberta Webb Child Care Center, and Shenandoah Valley Child Development Center.
