The United States Environmental Protection Agency, in conjunction with The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) of 1986, requires that all public and private schools inspect all buildings for the presence of asbestos. In addition, public schools must develop a management plan which identifies, defines procedure for managing, and schedules re-inspection of all asbestos present in the schools. Additionally, the school division is required to issue annual notification to parents/guardians and employees.

Retesting in HCPS was conducted in October 2024 by Engineered Systems, LLC in Lynchburg, Virginia and Blacksburg Environmental Solutions and Training, Inc., in Blacksburg, Virginia. HCPS facilities do not contain any regulated (friable or damaged non-friable) Asbestos-Containing Building Material. A few classrooms, work rooms, and office spaces in the division have small amounts of unregulated nonfriable asbestos that is present in sheet vinyl, floor tile, mastic, and transite panels. The detected asbestos is monitored periodically and is left undisturbed to prevent the fibers from becoming airborne. Management plans have been prepared and implemented.

The management plan, which includes laboratory reports, is available in each affected school and shows the location and amount of asbestos present. The management plan and subsequent updates are available for inspection during normal school business hours. Questions regarding any of this information may be directed to your school’s principal and/or the Operations Department.
