Mr. Brendon Derstine began working as the Principal of Spotswood in 2022. Prior to this, he was an assistant principal and teacher in Harrisonburg City Schools. Mr. Derstine holds a Bachelors of Arts in History and Social Sciences Education from Eastern Mennonite University and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from James Madison University.

He is committed to creating a school environment where every child experiences the joy of learning. With a deep belief in the power of education to transform lives, Mr. Derstine strives to foster a culture of curiosity, creativity, and academic excellence.

As a leader, Mr. Derstine works to ensure the student, family, and staff experience is inclusive of all by supporting joyful learning, sustainable practices, and equitable outcomes. He continuously seeks ways to learn from the experiences of students, educators, and families in order to build a collaborative and nurturing environment for all.
